But I really am wondering what ties these two things together, because I figure there is an elegant answer, because TPTB are no slouch.

Unless all of Reyes' theories about how it all works are just Wrong.  Smiley

Elegant answer AND Reyes is wrong. Woo-hoo! I betcha.

It can't be accidental (artistically speaking) that Frank happened right before this.

Reading this last segment was as close as I ever want to come to riding a roller-coaster. I felt like I was thundering down a hill at a hundred miles an hour with no brakes.

God, summer's going to be long . . .

Oh, thank God there will be more.

I don't post here that often but I have to say I've enjoyed the entire season and this was an excellent payoff. Put me in the crying camp. My partner actually turned off the show she was watching on TV to ask me if I was all right and what on earth I was crying about (given that I don't typically cry when in front of the computer).

God that was so beautiful and cruel. Someone mentioned an easter egg, and I was so busy crying I forgot to look. *off to look now*

Todd.  And Waco and Kent State and the wings.  I LOVE YOU TODD.

WORD. When I can think something other than "oh my god oh my god" I'll be flailing about Todd and his amazing awesomeness.

Also, Todd remembering to rescue the civilian. And the thing about his second Harley and the flatbed.

Nice contrast to the bit earlier where he made himself small and harmless for the rape victim.

During this episode I:

- did the dishes in the sink
- moved a litterbox down to the basement
- started laundry

I didn't decide to do these things. I just hit certain passages and just found myself elsewhere in the house, needing to do something other than see what happened next. Then I came back and read some more.

I'm fond of Todd, who has been a bit odd before this (hey, his LJ isn't listed on the Agent Journals list).

Sobbed like crazy at the "On belay" line. Scared the cats.

Okay, I need to go vacuum the house. Or rearrange the furniture or something.

This episode lead to hosuework. I hope you bastards are proud of yourselves.

I'd like to take this opportunity to tell you that you'll be getting post "Refining Fire" DVD extras on the site about, oh, every two weeks. We can't leave you WTF-less for the entire hiatus, because, though we are EEEvile, we are not as bad as that. Quite. *g*

We're also planning some cool stuff for you guys to play with over the break. And if that's not enough, think fanfic! fanvideo! Be inspired, and share the results with the rest of us!

Heh, the inspiration isn't the problem with SU. But I don't think anyone would thank me for drawing what are the most visually...memorable scenes in the past couple of episodes, namely BLOOD EVERYWHERE, and that damn bathtube of livers.

Not that I would drop hints. Because of course I would never do that.

But do you suppose an infant has had time to establish a mythology?

Ended up not getting home from a run to the coast before the episode went live. I stood on the beach this afternoon and stared at the waves rolling in and thought Hold on, Chaz. We're here. and had to blink back tears.

That, ladies and gentlemen, is what we call serious investment on the part of your audience.

On the way home, I told my husband "Shadow Unit just went live." And he glanced at me, patted my knee and said, "So, when we get in, you go read. I'll cover everything else." And he did, he unlocked the door, walked and fed the dog, fed the cats. "I hope he's okay," he said and kissed me on the top of the head before leaving me to finish reading.

Dove in, forced myself to slow down my reading pace twice before saying the hell with it. Sat here fighting to breath while I read.

Stood up at one one point, without thinking anything beyond wanting to move anywhere, as long as it was away. Didn't even take a step. My friend brain spoke up. 'I'm not leaving until he's out.'

Then Duke! Saved the nice lady! And scattered more clues to his backstory than we've seen all season. And I loved him so damn much I thought I couldn't love him more- and then he knew to go get Falkner and oh god. I love this team, each and every one (well, Reyes is on probation but he's not in the business of being loved, he's in the business of being out there on his own. Even with the team. I digress like a mad digressing thing, ahem).

I understand and share the Chaz love, seasoned with the understanding he's younger than my youngest daughter. I admire the living hell out of Falkner. The rest of the team has each made a special place in my heart. But Duke- oh Duke, standing out there with his arms spread. That's when I realized there were tears trickling down my face. That's what I caught  glimpses of off and on all season.

Imagery that will stay with me for days. Echoes and themes weaving in and out like a concerto.  The use of the LJs and previous episodes and Easter Eggs to do a slow multi-layered reveal that taught me to trust the writers and not expect everything to be handed to me on a plate. The genius of the day by day finale that put me in the head space where the length Chaz's ordeal was  clear and the agony of the team over the pace of the investigation was abundantly real and shared.

"On belay." Wrecked me. Just freaking wrecked me and Ithought at that point I was already as wrecked as I could get. But, like Duke says, you've never seen everything.

Itunes, in a fit of ESP, just cued up The Smithereens and I was fine until they got to

I need your love but it comes out wrong
I try to live but I don't belong
I close my eyes and I see
Blood and roses

And I dove for the off button.

There may be an actual litcritty response in my head somewhere. But not right now. Right now all I know is this is the best damn show ever.

My fandom trusts the writers, because the writers deliver. Thank you, all.

Of course, what the team refers to as "mythology" is just a person's conception of how the world works.

Some people's mythology is supernatural (I have been touched by Its noodly appendage!). Some people's mythology is straight out of Scientific American.

But for a kid, it's all just Reality. It's "What happens when I do this." Kids don't have pre-established notions of How Things Work. So they don't have trouble with it when it works like...that.

Your writers trust the fandom, BTW. Because you guys are made of smart. You're a joy to work for.

It was "Activity?"  "Slamming." that got me.

Because, well, yeah, Chaz was slamming.

But that's not the whole story.

And how the hell is he supposed to explain that?
