I agree that the sample size is way too small to make any kind of assertion about what a beta is and might do, but I've always thought of them as having the potential to develop one stage further. I'm not sure what my evidence is for that, other than there being a progression in the alphabet - Alpha, Beta, Gamma - but I've assumed that the potential is there. Plus, are we sure that no gammas have had a beta stage?
Actually, Gammas were named first and the Beta nomenclature is a backfill. I currently suspect that "Gamma" was a backhanded "Incredible Hulk" reference by Reyes. (Implying, for one thing, more of a sense of humor than I otherwise credit him with.) As far as I can tell, Reyes' Gamma-theory has Betas provisionally pegged as either "incipient Gammas" or "partial Gammas". I'm also sure that Reyes' Gamma-theory fit the observed data at the time, even though I've seen little evidence to support it in the text. (Reyes is many things. 'Stupid' is not one of them.) I suspect much would become obvious were we to see the "Reyes: The Early Years" miniseries. He is the mystery about which other myteries revolve. I don't think I can talk with any great knowledge about comic book references - not my area of expertise. And I don't think that my reading of the Beta/Gamma situation has come from any one text reference. I'm guessing that my assumption that the Betas are potential Gammas (not that they WILL move to that phase, but they CAN) could, to some extent, be linked with seeing the Anomaly as like cancer. Cancer can be caused by external factors (eg asbestos exposure), genetic predisposition (some forms of breast cancer) and also viral infection (human papilloma virus). Chaz's father being a gamma is surely no coincidence which asks the question that there may be a genetic predisposition. Or was Addy "infected" with it when she was raped? Is is something that lies dormant until triggered, or does it enter when the trigger happens? And sometimes we seem to be talking about the Anomaly as having a consciousness - which is interesting. I'm not sure I'm being particular articulate about this and I don't have a grand theory. I observed that I didn't seem as surprised as Falkner did and tried to unpick that.

That works. He gave us a direct 'Spiderman' reference when discussing mythologies in 'Breathe', after all! Reyes the comic book reader... Why does that image weird me out? I can see him being a Moore or Ellis fan, but Hulk and Spiderman? (Everyone has their little quirks, I guess. )

I don't think a non-fan would be the one to spot the Anomaly, somehow.
My fandom believes six impossible things before breakfast.

While watching the rerun of this episode, I noticed: "It's all right," Falkner said, on Pelletier's other side. "It wasn't you. This morning the man we're after made someone kill himself to try to slow us down. Nothing you could have done would have stopped this." She turned to the two firefighters who'd brought Joey in. "You may have saved your friend's life. Thank you."
Worth watched the three men's expressions change. She thought, She made it better.
I want to be that good someday. Do we have a replacement for Mom in the making? Not a happy thought since that would mean Mom would at some point become expendable.

Never expendable--but nobody's safe in her line of work. And hey, she might even live to retirement age!

Not to them, either. If they kill her off, they'll be crying in their keyboards.

They wouldn't be the only ones . . .
I don't know about Worth being a Falkner-in-waiting - I think she was expressing admiration and a little envy at Falkner's "mothering" skills. I don't know that she would see herself in that role one day - I'm not sure if Worth would be happy being a "leader" in that way. She seems more comfortable in the team, rather than leading it.

I do agree that Worth was just admiring the way Mom manipulated the situation with the firefighters to make things right rather than imagining herself in that role. But I do see Worth already trying to do the same thing within the team and on the Live Journals on occasion.

I think Daphne could grow up to be Mom. I don't think she thinks that, though. But she's got some of Esther in her. She cares for others (in the most literal way, sometimes -- she was an EMT), she tends to put others' feelings before her own... And someday, she might be able to control a situation the way Esther can.
She just has to, you know. Realize all that.

I just read in another thread that txanne got involved with Refining Fire. A quick search of the forums did not reveal anything, and I would rather not read the 56 pages in this topic. So would someone please fill me in with some details?
Thanks!

Chaz was supposed to stop in her town and eat BBQ with her. When he didn't show up or call, she got worried, and messaged Hafs, I think it was? this is one part of story that's mostly in the LJs.

http://cvillette.livejournal.com/63861.htmlIt happens around and about there, and goes on in Txanne's LJ as well. I'll let you hunt it up for yourself, tracking the wiley narrative throught the LJ thickets is part ofthe fun.

At the beginning of RF, Chaz thinks about missing his dinner date. Then when Hafs tells Falkner he's missing, she says the girl he was supposed to have dinner with said he never showed.
