I have an idea for a collaborative network promo video and associated stills for Season 3, but it would be a real test of SU fans from all over. In order to create the finished product I'm asking for submissions of digital photos of people, places and objects that look like something we've "seen" or would see from the SU universe. (If anyone finds the eggplant SUV I'll have to send you something special as a prize.) If you would like to participate, here are some details: - Images need to be taken on a digital camera with at least 3 megapixel resolution.
- Your camera needs to give you the ability to manually set the exposure value (EV).
- For people and objects, please shoot your subject against a solid blank background that contrasts with the subject. This isn't a requirement, but if it's practical for you to do so, it will make it much easier for me to remove the background during post-production compositing.
- For each picture that you plan, you'll actually be taking three separate images. Please set the EV to -2.0 for your first exposure, 0 for your second exposure, and +2.0 for your third exposure. There needs to be as little motion as possible between exposures.
In post production, I'll be taking each set of three exposures and combining them into stylized photos and photo objects that can be used to produce still and animated promotional materials for the upcoming season. I'll happily host the raw images as well as my processed versions for other fans to re-use in their own projects. If you're interested, let's chat about ideas here. |

OK Now we know what it takes to drag me out of lurk mode. I've got a Canon 40D, several flashes, a couple of Alien Bees, and way too much glass. I'm willing to take photo assignments. Also, you might take a look at http://www.flickr.com/photos/grayjack/ may be some usable background shots in there. Treat anything you find as stock photography. I can change the license on any of it to Creative Commons if you need, otherwise just feel free to use it. |

Color me jealous. My still camera is no great shakes and has no manual exposure setting unfortunately.
What I am wanting to do with the three different exposures is to composite them into high dynamic range images, then use tonal mapping to convert the composites back to LDR images. Stylistically I think that will work really well with some of the other processing techniques that I use on video. I want to create something dark and somewhat intense.

I've been meaning to try some HDR. I have a tripod and can set my camera to automatically bracket shots. I am curious about one thing. If I open a RAW file in Lightroom and save it one or two stops above and below will I produce a similar result when I merge to HDR? Maybe I need to run a parallel. If it works it might allow us to use RAW shots from people who don't have tripods, and don't know how to bracket. I can also get this kind of look http://www.flickr.com/photos/grayjack/3818319632/ using the LucisArt plugin in Photoshop plus a Nik sharpener. Anyway, however you want to approach it is fine with me. Let me know what's next. I think I might do a little experimenting. |

I, too have a CC flickr stream for all the good it'll do you. Can we brainstorm some subjects? I may go hang out by the Federal Building and see if I can get some SUVs ;-) If I disappear from the boards, that's probably why. |

Whoah. I read that as "I just need to find out if my camera has manual ECR settings." I was a little keyed-up about the DVD extra, I guess. Anyhow, will play with camera and see what I can do that might be useful. Hmm. Must ponder. |
