And, of course, there's also Reason #6598 on the 'Why Sol is more awesome than you can imagine' list.  Grin

(And the young-age makeup on our two stars was fantastic. I really believed I was seeing them 15 years ago!)

Special shoes.

(Speaking as a fan for the nonce, I liked seeing them before they knew each other so well, and all the prickles and rubs. Also, Todd when he was a little less Zen Master than he is these days, and Reyes a little less smooth son of a bitch. I suspect that people get more themselves as they get older. *g*)

The hair was the part I picked up on. (Well, that and the fact that they had the right type of Crown Victoria for 1995.)

...assuming, of course, that Edgar's powers actually worked, and he and his dad weren't just another damned pair of con men... *g*

;P
I knew you were gonna say that! But I like my theory, and I'm sticking to it.

This was a great episode, loved the Idlewood back then and the flashbacks. Vaguely reminds me of the Criminal Minds ep "Tabula Rasa" in the flashbacks and origins. Can someone give me a link to the easter egg?

*yawn* Ok, stayed up until 4am reading and re-reading this one. And it was worth it. Smiley
Though I am scouring for the Christmas egg and can't find it (though the 'next season, on Shadow Unit' snippettes made me do this:  Shocked especially the last one...ooooooo......).
Well done, Sarah, and thanks to the PTB for releasing a little gift to us readers. We lurves you!

This was definitely a 'wow' episode, mm-hmm. I find myself really curious about what exactly cracked Clemson McCain back in 1957 . . .

One weird thing that I noticed (and it could be that it's just me) was that usually, I get a strong "Criminal Minds"-ish vibe from SU episodes. This one felt more "X-Files", like one of the flashback episodes to the days of Cigarette-Smoking Man's youth. I think it might be rooted in how SU, like "Criminal Minds", is ordinarily an ensemble show, but this episode we just had Todd and Reyes in the present, and Demmer and Stone in the past.

Although I picked up on the possible slash, I more saw Stone and Demmer as parallels to Todd and Reyes. They didn't have enough pieces to put the puzzle together. Though their boss censoring things may have had something to do with that, too. Makes me wonder what would have happened if someone had put more together earlier. Not that that's a question that really could be answered.

And the preview for next season makes me twitch. A lot.

I love how many questions this episode *fails* to answer:

From the very start there's the question of inheritence vs transmission vs trauma (just like non-anomalous killers! If you let transmission = nuture) wrt to McCain Sr possibly being gifted, explicitly "laying hands" on his boys, and apparently having been abusive toward Clemson while favoring Edgar. I think it's telling that Clemson is our scientific "type" for gammas. And that Edgar may be the type for betas. And it's interesting how many thematic echoes get struck in something that looks like fairly straight-forward back/origin-story. (I hope we'll see Demmer and Stone again. In equally good circumstances.)

Is Halliday simply engaging in a CYA-policy by deep-sixing the original report or is there a larger conspiracy at work? A little of both?

Was Duke!Prime's crazy uncle anomalous? How sad would it be if Stone foreshadows Todd's future disposition?

Could Clemson have succeeded in killing people with his mind if he'd known about the possibility earlier? We've seen people who can, so did Clemson simply run out of sufficient neuroplasticity before he ran out of metabolic function (or, um, vice versa? -- not enough time left for what his rate of change allowed)? Hafs certainly has shown that she can deliberately expand her talents, and I think Chaz has too.

Also, am I the only person wondering if there is an apostolic succession between McCain senior and the Church of the Living Word? Our series certainly focuses a lot on the work of human hands....

I loved seeing Todd and Reyes: The Early Years and although I think I've said this before, and will say it again, I love Solomon Todd just a little bit more.

I doubt it. Edgar died too suddenly to lay hands on his successor, and that's the definition of "apostolic succession."

Or perhaps someone who was 'healed' by Edgar started the Living Word church, or was the inspiration of the start of it?

Personally, I'm also stuck on why Clemson never exhibited the external signs of being a gamma (needing tons of calories, and being gaunt), during all the years they had him in Idlewood and before that time. I think someone commented in a post about this being displayed with the Living Word church episode, as a potential gamma adaptation (i.e. as the team catches up with more gammas, they are adapting by being less conspicuous). But given the timeline, this means either gammas have an equal chance of being skinny or being paunchy (and then why haven't there been more paunchy ones that they team has caught up to?) or there is something unique about those few gammas who aren't skinny (and why is no on studying this??). Hrmmmmmmm.....

Psst. Edgar was plump. Clemson was rangy. Big-framed and moon-faced, but not fat. The fact that Todd says that he's the source of what they know about the gamma metabolism would tend to indicate that he eats like a horse.

He's also spend a lifetime with plenty of food and doing very little work. And very little jamming.
