When I first entered the Shadow Unit fandom (around the time...Mirror Writing came out I think), I remember being confused because I wanted to read the extras, but I'm an absolute spoiler-phobe and didn't know when to read what. Or if there was a reference I didn't understand. And when should I read the easter eggs? Some may reacall me asking ages ago if anyone had a list, in order of publication, basically everything that was written.
Well. I've been trying to get my friend into SU for absolute ages, mostly because she draws ALOT and there is not enough fanart of this show....that and I want someone else in meatspace to squee with. Anyhoodle, one day I sent her Beginning, that first extra with Reyes and Faulkner. I said to just try it.
We had a conversation today about why she wouldn't read SU at first. Things like not wanting to read online fiction anymore, long term stuff on the computer hurts her eyes (understandable stuff). I kind of pouted, saying I had planned on maybe printing it out eventually. She said, "....You really want me to read this don't you..?" "YES." Bulgy, fangirly eyes.
....Next thing I know, I get this IM: "There. I read the teaster for Shadow Unit. Happy?" Insert my rambling about how IT GETS WAY BETTER THAN -THAT-. I also ramble about the other characters, and if she really wants to see the interactions and stuff, she might want to read the first act of Breathe. "I'm already halfway through."
SQUEE.
So, back on track. In my frenzy of squee, while she was busy reading Shadow Unit, I tried to put together a basic list of what extras she should read in what order. I already made a similar list a few months ago, using the wiki timeline, of the eggs/extras/episodes in chronological order. I found that this didn't work as well, so tonight, in my squee, I set about fixing it, trying to associate the extras and eggs with their proper episodes, and at least attempt some semblance of "order of publication." I even put the URLs next to them.
And I'm done--I'm pretty sure I have it.
The purpose of this post is to 1) show off 2) get the approval of the PTB and the fans who've been with this from the beginning that I'm doing it right 3) offer it to newbies and friends of newbies who wish to read the eggs and extras while reading the episodes.
I'll put the list in the reply post.

That is totally cool.
Maybe we should find a way to publicize that. Like a sticky link in the news boards or something.

Fantastic! I was already considering starting at the beginning again, but this clinches it. Thanks!

Eeeee, thanks guys!
....I considered including important LJ entries, like cvilette's last post and standuponit's first. But that's going a bit too far, don't you think?

Hrm.....all I need is a flist that goes allllllllllllllllll the way back to the beginnings of the ljs. I only started reading them a couple months ago, after I had finished season 1.

As someone who doesn't regularly follow the LJs, I have to say that if you felt like doing that, I, personally, would find it awesome. But it's already awesome, so no pressure. And as one moderately obsessive person to, I suspect, another, I want to thank you for putting that together. It's a real resource, and not just for newbies. It makes me want to go back and reread everything in perfect order, just to get the sense of everything stacking up...rather like a Jenga tower in the last stages of the game.

I too must thank you.
I caught about 10 bits that I hadn't read before.
Thank you, thank you, thank you.

My first reaction was: Wow, you put a lot of work into that! *claps* My second reaction was: I've read THAT much Shadow Unit in the last year or so? I had no idea!

Almost a third of a million words of fiction, at last check, not counting the ljs.
(This is where we remind folks to throw money. *g*)

Well that answers a question I had.
Last year I kept a list of all the books I read for fun.
The answer was 52.
I am doing the same thing for this year. Shadow Unit gets listed--not that I wasn't leaning that way anyway.
And money has been thrown. I just "bought" S1 in "paperback".
