Oh, squee, a characteristically oblique icon!  Nice job, Etherjammer.  I'm totally snagging it.  :-)

"Hafidah hummed six notes of the Jeopardy theme"

I think not. It kinda has to be seven notes. 95% of everybody who would do that will go with the opening phrase: five eight five one five eight five. The other five percent will go with the final phrase: eight {breath} six five four three-ee two-oo one {bom bom!} The only phrase that's six notes long is the second half of the second phrase (threeee, two one sevsixfive), and, by itself, it's hardly recognizable as having anything to do with Jeopardy.

And the musicians in the room want to shout "Resolve, dammit!" Smiley

And you think I didn't consider that?  Still not a flying toy.

a) She stops on the 6th note. The listener fails to recognize the theme, and makes no comment on it. In which case, mentioning it to the reader is pointless.

b) ... the listener recognizes the theme and does what just about any normal listener would do: comments on the lack of resolution. But this didn't happen.

c) ... recognizes the theme and the lack of resolution, but says nothing, knowing that Hafida likes to be an annoying pill in that way. But this would be a distinctive character trait, and not letting the *reader* know that Hafs is that sort of person is misleading.

If it were possible to craft a convincing (to me) retcon, I would have done it for myself and not bothered posting.

For some reason, the first six notes of the Jeopardy theme are now also mapping, in my brain, to one-and-a-half iterations of the Twilight Zone theme, which is a bit crazy, because they really *aren't* the same. Bloody damned earworms...

(Also, about 15 years ago, one of the IT guys where I was working gave me a "tz.com" file, that used the... um, what's the term I want for straight-out computer tones rather than a music, etc. program, and pre-most of the fancy 'Doze things - this thing ran on DOS - the Twilight Zone theme. Wonder if I've even got it on this computer... *starts file search* ... yep, still have it. Grin )

Regarding Hafidha and the Jeopardy theme: that part of "Ballistic" is Brady POV, and not only is he exhausted at that time, he's just made the Grossman connection. Perhaps he didn't pick up on the lack of musical resolution because he's more concerned about the new twist in the case. Or perhaps he didn't pick up on the lack of musical resolution because he's not that much of a musician himself. Or perhaps because he's just too damn tired at that point.

Besides, Chaz goes hypoglycemic two paragraphs later, which makes for a pretty emphatic change of subject.

I just re-read this, and the ending reads entirely differently after reading "Five Autopsies". It does rather give one pause.

Well, it's not just "Five Autopsies" -- it's that in combination with what she says to Chaz in one of the "vigil" vignettes. That bit about knowing that if she ever developed an anomalous ability, they'd lock her up in Idlewood and never, ever let her go. I have the impression that she considers Idlewood to be a fate worse than death, and since we now know that she has killed in the past... I wonder if that "accidental" nick to the blood vessel was a little less accident and a little more what she would think of as a mercy killing. Which would make the wording of her final report both honest -- she knows she could have done it differently, and takes full responsibility -- and a bit of misdirection.

I'm not arguing that this has to be true, only that it's a plausible alternate interpretation, and one which I now see as in keeping with Frost's character as it has been revealed to us.
