Well, yes. I had always thought that was rather the point of the rose, that the Prince didn't see her, but what he wanted to see, as we are all prone to do sometimes. I'm much more interested in the snake and the elephant, and in the Prince's conversation with the fox.

Eh. I think my problem is that thinly-veiled allegories aren't my thing. (Unless they're Narnia.)

You know, Lewis always insisted that Narnia wasn't meant to be an allegory.
I've always wondered whether or not I believe him, though.

30) In the image above the vid plate, the sperm writhed in elegant, sinuous curves.
Diplomatic Immunity, LMB. (Not one of her better books IMO.)
(No guesses on my previous one? There was even a movie made of it!)
n+1) Miss Savage was missing.

sorry - busy RL. it was nice to see Swallows and Amazons go by. We went to the Lake District, and sailed into the secret harbor on one of the islands that was used for Wildcat Island. It was pretty awesome.
A first line: Faris Nallaneen arrived at the gates of Greenlaw College on the same day winter did.

Caroline Stevermer, A College of Magics. Argh, I don't have anything at work that I can quote from, and my memory is coming up blank. I'll have to owe you one, and add it this evening when I get home. Sorry!

Caroline Stevermer, A College of Magics. I love that book. Here, have a first line: 46) It is his last day, and by six in the morning he is already drinking, drinking and shot up, eyes frantic, limbs flailing like he's ready to explode.

And an easy one for those of you who feel uncultured: 38) In a hole in the ground there lived a hobbit.
Would that actually be from "The Hobbit"?

Would that actually be from "The Hobbit"? Yes, it is. (Which means it's your turn to come up with a first line.)

This one of mine is still all friendless and lonely and unclaimed: "They never turn the lights off in Grand Central; and they may lock the doors between one and five-thirty a.m., but the place never quite becomes still."
Should I give a hint or two? The Afterword contains an extensive description of the People's "occupation" (or pastime) of hauissh; A Very Partial Ailurin Glossary follows the Afterword.

I was hoping somebody else would get that one, too. Diane Duane, The Book of Night With Moon. I still have a bunch going unclaimed, so I shall for the time being recuse myself from adding.

There are still some unclaimed lines with awfully low numbers. Is there a point in which we may turn, shame-faced, to the Internet?

Oh, hey, I'm supposed to add one, too...
Some years ago there was in the city of York a society of magicians.
