Someday, I will really and truly understand all of your customs.  And that will signal, um, you must have some end-of-the-world cultural reference; pretend I've just used it.

Splash, if you get to that point, be sure to let us know. I'm not sure any of us understand all of our customs. That 7 billion people that Bear was alluding to previously? There's a lot of separate cultural and social groups in there, and they all have their own customs, histories, and traditions.

Well, as I don't yet understand all of the culture in Port Outreach, much less the rest of Mother, I don't think there's any danger of it happening any time soon.

I tried to figure out "catholic," but there were too many definitions, and following them made my brain hurt.  So then I thought I'd least figure out what "homophobia" was, and that was worse.  I think I'm going to have to give up my mediator eye, at least on this forum.  I think I'll shut up for a while and try to puzzle things out.

I won't try to explain homophobia unless you ask, because I get too worked up, but in this case, Catholic means the Roman Catholic Church and its members, and part of the problem is that Kalaong is not making a distinction between the dogma of the Church and the opinions of its members.  Generally, capitol-C Catholic refers to the Church.

And I was NOT going to bring that up.  Smiley One of the prayers my religious group prays uses "catholic" in that sense, and visitors get outraged frequently.

It also means "universal." Way to confuse little Episcopalian kids reciting the creed!

You see my problem.

First thing a mediator learns is: there are times to just shut up and listen.  Second thing a mediator learns is: those times are much more frequent than one thinks.

As I understand it, the Christian church in Rome called itself the "catholic" or "universal" church.  Hence Roman Catholic Church.

No, the catholic and universal Church is all Christians everywhere and forever. The Roman Catholic Church is the group of Christians who listen to the pope of Rome.

It would certainly be convenient to have a word that means addicted to cats.  It might be confusing to have a word that means addicted to Roman cats.

Now I'm trying not to make a joke centred around "Greek ortho-dogs"...  but then I'd have to explain it...  Smiley

The Roman Catholic Church, once upon a time several centuries ago, was the sole flavor of Christianity found in most of Europe, and it took the name Catholic as a claim that it was the universal Christian Church when there started being other flavors.  If I'm remembering correctly.
