I decided it was positively criminal that we didn't already have a discussion thread for this book.  That being said, it's before my morning coffee, so I'm not sure how articulate my discussion will be.

I suppose my main question is, where did the idea start?  Was it intentionally, er, Gay Norse Pern?  Or did the parallel structure simply occur?

I actually picked up this book on a whim, so i was twice as amazed at this book. I often enjoy books that push the boundrys, and as you put it,'GNP', it dose just that.
I even put in the time to go to Elizabeth Bear's homepage and read in interest about this book and any of her other works. to answer you'r question, or at least part of it, she said that they came up with the idea(s) emailing each other. That it was origunally intended to be short but grew out. (not her exact wording) I hope that helps. I just really liked this book, so i thought i'd help answer a fellow fans interests. Grin

"Hey, kin Bruno come out to play?"

"No!"

"Aww, Mom--"

"No, Bruno, I've told you before. No fraternizing with them."

Is it just me, or does that wolf look huge compared to the size of the mama bear?

That's either a very big wolf, or a rather small bear.   Poor wolfy just wanted someone to play with.
