Heh -- if you assume Reyes is really ignorant of such things, it can all come back around again to Hafs yanking his chain by sprouting a bunch of incomprehensible geek talk. I'm pretty sure my dad doesn't have a clue what Wikipedia is, for instance....

Ooh, yeah! "Out of Gas" is one of my favorite Firefly episodes (okay, just about all of them are, but it's Firefly!). I love the character intro bits. We got a taste of it in the pilot when Faulkner was thinking about how you don't see the real person until they've had time to settle in, with hints of how Lau and Brady and Chaz appeared when they first joined. Seeing a bit more of each character's intro is gonna be fun! |

In Act I Chaz is described as licking the sugar off his "mouth" then fingers, then "mouth" again - I guess you meant lips, but the word choice seemed awkward to me.
Actually, I think it's the perfect word choice. Using "lips" there would have been more sensuous than I think was intended; "mouth" kept it as a strictly functional gesture. (But perhaps that's my word associations coming in.) Besides, "mouth" covers a broader area than just the lips, even externally. RE: Hafs = her own Wi-Fi
One thing that seems odd is that she could/would continue to manifest after it was done. The way it was described, she was already ravenous after hosting it for only a little bit of time. I would think that she'd need to "turn it off" or the load on her body would be too much. If she has to supply all the energy, that's a lot of food to go through just to give yourself wireless. I got the impression that she couldn't turn it off. Maybe she wouldn't be actively using the network, but it's always there. Which, given the theme of the episode, could present interesting mental health problems for her in the future. And how effective is Hafidha's internal security? I can imagine someone trying to crack her - or even just log in - thinking she was just another remote node. (" HELO pool-72-212-117-215.phx03.dsl-w.verizon.net" "Shut up." RE: Breakthrough Ah, I see. I had read through the Jargon file and thought I understood breakthrough, but it wasn't totally clear. Basically what you're saying is that when the initial breakthrough occurs it requires a great deal of energy, with the possibility of taking too much energy, resulting in the death of the host (IE: Burnout). However, once the breakout occurs, the energy requirements are significantly lower. I suppose this could be explained as the breakthrough is the energy needed to create the physical structures in the body to manifest/direct the powers. However, you note in the section on "Slamming" that when the Anomaloid is manifesting their powers it increases their need for food. If she's got a Wi-Fi router in her head, that's got to take some additional amount of power. If it's always on, won't she be even hungrier? I fully expect a scene with her in an Anechoic Chamber as they investigate the extent of her powers. I wonder if she would find it physically uncomfortable to be cut off from the network. RE: Mouth A quick Google search for "licked his mouth" actually returns a bunch of references to dogs, wolves, and foxes. If you imagine Chaz as a lean and hungry fox, the image is pretty evocative. |

Yes. Jamming does require a fair amount of additional energy. As you will note, when Chaz and Hafidha are using their abilities, they tend to wind up eating a lot more. However, there's a physical limit to how much energy a human body can assimilate in a given day (I think it breaks down around 7000-8000 calories, if I remember my polar explorers properly.)
In breakthrough, the energy demands exceed that. And the body begins consuming its reserves.
Assuming it has any.

The writing room hasn't discussed this much, so consider this a fan's theory, but I think betas and gammas, once they convert but before they manifest, are effectively in "sleep" mode, drawing a little power--okay, enough to cause them to starve if they don't keep the calories coming, but you know what I mean. "Breakthrough" is a surge. Survive the breakthrough, and they can go between sleep mode and active mode with varying degrees of effectiveness. As for what makes a beta or a gamma, it'll all become clearer. Someday. |

Very cool ep. One thing that I like, based on only two full episodes, is that no one is actually coming off as supersomeone. Whatever thing that might be considered too much, like Sol's (supposed) background, gets affirmed in a way that makes sense and takes the "super" out of it. TV never really lets you see the experience behind thought in a character the way text does.
I've probably screwed my explanation of what I mean, but take it as a compliment.

Yah know, this is tax season, I ought to be working on client tax stuff, but SU is taking over my life. Between my Bear-induced addictions to Criminal Minds, her LJ, her books (all of which I bought last week) and now this, I have decided the only way to handle things is to not sleep until after April 15th. That should work. No problems.
