If you're nomming cloves, you're tougher than I thought. If you do, etymologically speaking, you can tell people you eat nails for dessert. (We get "clove" from the French word "clou," which means "nail.")

I like to chew on them.

A local Greek restaurant had a small bowl of them and spoon at the counter/cash register. Better than mints as a breath freshener (IMO, etc.).

The Indian equivalent is fennel seeds and tiny sugar candies. Om nom nom.

And cardamom pods! Way tastier than sunflower seeds.

I chew on cloves, but only when I'm sick. I find them to be a good alternative to cough drops (which are too sweet and irritating).

Whole cloves make me think of SCA parties and kissing.

My barony had a fad for cloved fruit. I will never forget the cloved watermelon and grape.

We used to spell things out with the cloves. As far as unusual fruit goes, cloven kumquats are good. Gummy bears are cute. Pierced tongues are interesting.
Cloven steak on a knifepoint is just silly.

A friend of mine had an interesting story about a clove lime.  Alas, I don't remember the details well enough to relate it well, only that the lime in question was . . . vintage, the lord presenting it even less appealing than the fruit, and the lady's reaction was to take a rather large bite of the citrus rather than return a clove.

I never return cloves. It isn't period.

Nothing about the game is period, as far as i can tell.  That doesn't prevent it from being a widespread and almost unassailable custom in many SCA groups.

For us poor benighted souls who aren't part of the SCA - what exactly does this cloves-and-kissing tradition entail?

I dunno. I've heard it alluded to before, something to do with cloves as an aphrodisiac. Something like pseudo-period bobbling for apples or spin the bottle.

Which is downright funny when you consider that clove oil is a mild topical anesthetic (that's why I chew on them when I have a cough. They numb my throat).

Oh darling! Kiss me! KISS ME!

... um, are you kissing me? I can't really tell.

And now I have to go sit on the filthy minds bench again as I ponder the uses of a numb throat.
