The creation of the characters' LiveJournals was Bear's doing, and an utterly boffo idea. It gave readers a chance to get acquainted with some of the cast in a setting where there wasn't also a lot of plot to keep up with, and gave the writers a chance to explore the characters' voices and concerns. It was a huge benefit to the project.

I have something to say about this, but I'm taking it to the Meta board.

It worked okay for Shadow Unit because enough readers trust Emma and Bear and Sarah, so they were willing to take the time to learn who all these people are.

I think partly (at least for some of us) it also worked because we already knew some of the people in question through the LJs, and the snippets and teasers that had appeared on the site before 'Breathe' went live.  It was actually rather better than promos for a new TV series, which seem to be mostly concerned with introducing you to genre and/or one big, important character/question as a 'hook'.

Not only did we have lots of hooks--so if one didn't grab us, another was likely to--but we had a map to the younger set of characters, and suddenly it was a case of, Oh, so that's what Hafs/Daphne/Chaz looks like from outside, and these are all the people they've been talking about in code--okay, yeah, I know where I am...

At least, that's how it worked for me.

The LJ's didn't quite work for me, but the teasers totally sold me long before the first ep went live.  I think we had glimpses of every character and enough of a glimpse that we got something of a feel for them so that we didn't go in completely cold.

And there is the trust issue.

The LJs didn't work for me at all without the context of the episodes. Once I had that, though, I was addicted to both.

Hafs and Daphne didn't work for me, but Chaz! Food! did. I usually find new LJ people from comments they leave--then I leap into their LJ and inclue myself as I go along. So it really wasn't different in any way from my regular habits--I think that's why I have such a strong ReaderBrain/FriendBrain dichotomy going.

I have to say, the LJ entries totally worked for me! I've never used LJ, and rarely been interested enough in anything I've surfed to on LJ from wherever I've found links in my too-much-time-on-my-hands roaming to get into it. But from the moment I found Chaz and Daphs and Haf's LJs, I was hooked! The teasers were cool, but the LJs really bring the characters to life for me. I want them ALL to have accounts, even though I know it would be completely out of character for most of them, so I can get to know everyone better. Greedy. I'm just greedy.

I'm constitutionally opposed to starting things with Origin Stories

Horace seems to agree with you. Homer, who is never inept, takes (rapit) his listener into the middle of things (in medias res) rather than begin with their origins (De Arte Poetica liber, 140-152).
