Stephen Reyes: "We don't learn anything from dead gammas."

(Madeline Frost: <sniff> "Don't we now?")

Well, Reyes doesn't learn anything from them, but I'll bet Frost can and does.

Snacking, folks, snacking. I don't know where you got any other ideas, and frankly I'm not sure I want to know =)

Passage at Arms amazed me, and I'm total Glen Cook fangirl. (The computer I'm typing this to you on is named Garrett Steel.) On the other hand, can't get into his newest thing, the Instrumentalities of the Night.

ok, back to your actual topic now...

I like the Instrumentalities of the Night series, but I think it would have benefited a lot from a better proofreader or copy-editor. Glen Cook really likes to use sentence fragments, which doesn't bother me so much in dialog, but it irritates my inner grammarian no end when it's in descriptive text. Honestly, at least once a chapter you run into "This sentence no verb" situations, and places where if someone had spliced adjoining fragments together, you'd have a perfectly acceptable sentence.

Cook uses fragments in the Garrett series and in the Black Company series, but in those books it's much more smoothly and infrequently done and doesn't jar you out of the narrative.

Yeah, that's exactly my issue with it. My husband loves it, says it fits the narrator, but I just can't let go of the style to read it.

Well, thinking about it, it does fit the major protagonist in Instrumentalities. He's playing at least four or five different roles, showing different people different fragments of himself. But it's still bloody annoying.
