WOW. A x-files type show that pays more than lip service to physics. Thank you for remembering conservation of energy! I am very much looking forward to reading more.

I am specifically eager to learn more about how gammas were identified / discovered, and why there seems to be such certainty that an outside force is responsible.

I think it's still very much in doubt that there's an outside force responsible.  It appears it could still be like a psychological malady.  Something happens to a person and they break in a certain way, sometimes they go crazy, sometimes they go gamma.  Perhaps there's gamma potential in everyone, or perhaps just a small cross section of the population.

Talking about "the anomaly" is just a way to discuss it.  It could be like a parasite or virus (outside agencies), or it could be like cancer or psychosis (no outside agencies).   We've got clues and theories but only the authors know.

Depends what you mean by "outside force."  I don't think it has to be extra-Tellurian; I think rather it is an as yet not understood force of nature that responds to something inside the individual.  I have exactly no evidence for any of this; it's just the way it's been feeling to me as I watched the first season unfold.  I imagine I'll have all of my theories disproved happily as things progress.  Meanwhile, the dialog is SO good!
