Very interesting story, and telling it from from the view of the friend of the anomaly was a clever choice.  The fact that she thought she was the person responsible was deeply touching.  The "symptoms" of being a "witch" seem to be getting out into the public domain.  The fact that Patty didn't display those symptoms while her friend did seems to have been lost on her father.

I have to agree there is no easy way to keep the fundamental weirdness of this from getting out into a more general public knowledge. There isn't a villain to blame here, and there will be questions.

I suppose we'll have to wait for the season to unfold to see how this affects the WTF team's attempt to stay out of the limelight.

Meanwhile, I'll need to go back and look for the Easter egg.

I keep wondering whether Stephanie is genetically related.  This is one of those real small places, right?

I was thinking that as well, although it would have to be further back than Patty's grandmother to be plausible.

It also makes me wonder what Patty's grandfather was like. Her mother marrying an abusive asshole would certainly fit one of the common dysfunctional patterns.

So at first I thought this episode was mostly gamma-of-the-week (with a side of sociology and people-are-noticing-the-WTF and Sol's-here-they're-understaffed). Then it occurred to me that Our Heroes have a new strategic problem: if mythology / method of action contagion becomes more common, they're not going to be able to profile gammas based on what happened to the victims. They'll just have pure victimology (the gamma still wanted to hurt those people, but not necessarily that way).

In this episode, for example, Stephanie's manifestation would clearly have been something to do with snakes if she'd never met Patty but had still gone gamma. If someone had died from phantom-venom-poisoning, the team would have looked for the person in town who was obsessed with snakes. But with this manifestation, the team is wouldn't have had much to go on (just "probably a student or teacher or museum employee") if the deaths hadn't been in public, in a group, and sparing an eyewitness who just happened to be a confidante of the gamma and had seen her eat lunch. Is the It adapting to how the team hunts it?

They've thought of that, and as I recall it creeped me right the hell out at the time. From The Unicorn Evils:
Quote

"And I don't know if you've considered this," Chaz said, "but organisms often evolve faster when experiencing selective pressure."

"Us," Reyes said, unwillingly.

Chaz gave up and stuffed the phone into his coat pocket. "Not to put too fine a point on it. We're punctuating its equilibrium."

On re-reading, the idea has not gotten any less worrisome.

I like this statement of the issue, as it avoids anthopomorphication.

That sounds like an act that would be illegal in certain states...

So apparently it's not on Anthropomor_fic. Which is a shame.

However.

I found this in my Livejournal.

You're very welcome. Cheesy

I suppose I was asking for it.

You'd think I'd learn...

And it's interesting that the WTF's mission is leaking so far out - I wonder who else knows?  And is anyone going to take vigilante action - after all, if the FBI are hunting "witches", that means it's real, and surely it's your duty to stop witches?

And for double irony points, Daphne was a witch, that supposition would have cut deeply had she lived to see it.

But with ACTF 'call us' pamphlets or whatever going out to every law enforcement agency in the States, from NYPD to Hicksville PD, to the Deliverance Sheriff's Department (cue <obligatory banjo phrase>), the point that someone is going to sit down and piece the clues in that watch list together to see what the FBI are hunting is an all to obvious one. Everyone who sees it is supposed to be able to spot clues and tie them together, it just happened to be a couple of misogynistic rednecks who turned their ire on a little girl.

I guess that's how it started in Salem too.

Did you guys find the extra?

You know you've been away too long when you forget the extra (and I wouldn't care but I've just written one <doh>).

I guess Chaz's mom, and her history, shows that sometimes love can be stronger than hope. But that made for a powerful contrast.

Though probably not as illegal as anthromorphication...
