In the season three promo, one of the quotes was "Slow and savage, Todd smiled. 'At last! My right arm is complete again!'" This has not yet appeared in Shadow Unit, but the line "My right arm is complete again" is spoken by Sweeney Todd (in the eponymous musical) when Sweeney gets back his razors. Could this perhaps be a Sweeney Todd reference, maybe made by our Todd? Or Sol is making fun of a crime with razors?

I don't think Todd would mock a crime. I do think he'd make a Sweeney Todd reference if he were ever allowed to carry a gun--a privilege he had to give up when he retired.

I liked the idea that it referred to his journalist's pen (I seem to remember a conversation about it on here?)

Hm.
I could imagine Todd using a pen as a weapon. No, an actual sharp-thingie-type weapon.
Hmm.
Down, plot bunnies. Down, I say!

</lurk> He wouldn't necessarily have had to give it up. See LEOSA.

Technically speaking, he is still allowed to carry a gun--both under LEOSA (as mentioned below) and based on contextual evidence, he has in the past had a concealed carry permit in at least one state. But he is not longer *required* to carry one.

Where I live, he wouldn't even need the permit.

Any suggestions?

Well, it's in Niven's Footfall (which I've read numerous times, but have not yet seen Sweeney Todd, and so the reference had been lost on me)

I've read Footfall, so my mind may be merging that and something else.

To be fair, it may be more of speculation than a correction. I was poking at extras yesterday and found this in Recidivism: "I'm turning in my gun," he admitted. "But I'll be staying on as a consultant. You'll be seeing me again." Then again, it's Sol, and that may have been a piece of misdirection aimed at the Bug. But on the gripping hand, he'll be under a lot more scrutiny if he shoots someone - even a host - as a private citizen. We don't get any easy answers. Hello, Tegyrius! We look forward to getting to know you!
Howdy! I suppose I should hoist myself off the Lurking Bench now.

I suspect that's either "turning in my gun" figuratively, or turning in my FBI issued weapon literally. Which doesn't mean he isn't carrying a different one.
Though I really like the "my right arm is complete again" with Sol saying it being about a pen. Or at least partially about a pen and/or writing. Because Sol totally does the multi-layered sense of humor thing.
