Glinda, we *always* need scones!
Right. What was I thinking? *slaps self upside the head* (Thinking has been replaced by "Ooooh! new cat! has been here a bit over 48 hours now! Sleeps snuggled with human at night! Occasionally stays on lap at computer long enough to cut of circulation in legs!") (photos on my LJ once I find where I've hidden my camera this time, may take a couple more days) (the link from PAWS of Bainbridge is here: http://www.petfinder.com/petdetail/16668470 - that "XL" in the description = OMG 18 pounds) (Also also since I've gotten her through their PALS program http://www.pawsbainbridge.org/programs/pals.html they will pay all her vet bills. Ever. No, I'm not letting them buy her food & litter as well, but they sent me home with over 3 dozen cans of gooshyfuds and a 6# bag of "senior formula" dry food and wouldn't let me say no... good grief.) *wanders off, babbling happily* Seconded on what a lovely cat. But I think the person who had her before was an asshole. Had her declawed and then "developed allergies"? BS. Good on you for taking her home, I'm sure she'll be happily ordering you around in no time.

Nah, the story from the gal at PAWS is that the woman's doctor flat-out told her "let go of the cat" - they'd tried allergy shots, etc., and she just wasn't improving enough (as in, her breathing). They'd had her for seven+ years, after all. 'S very sad. (I personally know someone who may lurk around here who's had to make that same, heartbreaking choice.) I'm just amazed that Hannah was there so many months, and no one else fell in love with her at first head-butt into hand. Maybe she was waiting for me? That's getting a bit woo-woo, even for me, but I'm so glad she's here now. She's far more playful than my last two combined, and I've got to re-learn that touching the paws means paws grab hand, mouth is on hand, and a gentle but firm and unmistakeable warning is issued. (No, she doesn't break the skin; doesn't even leave a dent.) (However, I've a pawprint-sized bruise on my upper abdomen from when she was walking across me. I do bruise easily, but it'll be interesting to explain to my doctor that no, the realationship with my cat isn't abusive, she just doesn'tk now her own strength. *grin*)

What a handsome lady she is! A grande dame cat.
Thank you! A somewhat *mischievous* grand dame. I have *got* to figure out where my camera is. I'm beginning to suspect she's one of those rare kitties who will actually pose, rather than abandoning the photogenic behavior the second she sees a camera.

Not weird at all. Cats pick people; she picked you. This is much easier for them to do to people who have already owned a cat, as you have been previously inoculated with the Kitty Mind Control virus.

Is there room on the Jealous as Hell Bench for one bearing buttermilk cranberry scones, still warm from the oven? I could do honey cornmeal scones instead, if people would prefer them....
OK, that means we don't need my non-buttermilk cranberry scones (heavy on the nutmeg), but I'd love your recipe for honey cornmeal scones - I don't think I've even *seen* cornmeal scones. Cornbread, corn muffins, cornmeal pancakes, I grew up on all three of those, but scones? drools in anticipation* (Oh, and Anadama bread, which is a yeast bread with cornmeal and molasses, which I encountered in my late 20s and haven't made for too long...) Glinda, I'll try to remember to PM You the cornmeal scone recipe tomorrow. Unless there's a general clamor for the recipe, in which case I could post it for all to enjoy. Also: Your new lady is a charmer!

All right, everybody. Without further ado, honey cornmeal scones (from the Once Upon a Tart cookbook, which I highly recommend):
3 cups unbleached all-purpose flour 1 tablespoon plus 1 teaspoon baking powder 1 1/2 cups yellow cornmeal 1/2 teaspoon salt (I usually skip the salt, but that's just a personal preference) 1/2 cup packed light-brown sugar 1/2 pound (2 sticks) cold unsalted butter, cut into 1/4-inch cubes 2 large eggs 1 cup cold milk 1/2 cup honey 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1. Place oven rack in the center of the oven, preheat oven to 400 degrees. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper. 2. Dump the dry ingredients into the bowl of a food processor fitted with a metal blade, and pulse to mix. 3. Add the butter to the bowl all at once. Run food processor for about 15 seconds. Then continue to mix (pulse for more control) just until the mixture looks like moist crumbs. 4. In another bowl, whisk the eggs to break up the yolks. Whisk in the milk, honey, and vanilla. 5. Pour the wet ingredients into the bowl with the crumbs. Stir with a wooden spoon. Stop as soon as the dough comes together and there's no more flour visible. Don't overwork the dough. 6. Use a 1/2-cup measuring cup to scoop the batter out and plop it onto the baking sheet, leaving 2 inches between scones. 7. Place the baking sheet on the rack in the center of the oven, bake for 20-25 minutes, until the tops are golden brown and a toothpick inserted into the center of one comes out clean.
This makes 12 scones.
Enjoy!

*drools* I was never terribly fond of scones. All the scones I've ever had were rather dry and crumbly, but this sounds like I might in truth enjoy eating them.
Might have to try this.
Glinda, your new feline lady is gorgeous! Sounds like she has a lovely temperament also. Congratulations.
