I don't think caffeine is the issue.  These people have serious coffee habits.  "Chemical dependency" is probably a better descriptor of their relationship with caffeine, rather than "avoidance."

That is a slanderous lie. English is the language that got beat up by other languages and forced to assimilate their vocabularies. And, I mean, it's no shame getting invaded by the Vikings and the Romans, but being conquered by French refugees ... that's just embarrassing.
The Normans weren't French. They were Vikings (Norðmann -> Norman, see) that the French had bribed with land in an attempt to keep them out of the rest of France.

Well, by the 1100s they were French enough to be Christian, speak only French, and have territorial disputes with the regular Scandinavian Vikings.  I was wrong about the refugees bit, though. They weren't kicked out of France; William the Conqueror invaded England because there was a power vacuum.  But it was okay because he had a note from the Pope that said he could.

hmmmm ... I'll take anyone calling Falkner, Reyes, Todd or Brady by their first names.  Not counting narration from their POV.  Unless I'm losing by too much.

Hooray for Apocalyptica!  The same people who introduced me to heavy metal cello also pointed me at Nox Arcana and Dead Can Dance, both of which are mostly instrumental but do have a very SU-ish ambience.

random others:
The Clash - London Calling
Oscar Brown Jr - Mr Kicks
Tears for Fears (actually I like Gary Jules' version better) - Mad World
Pennywise - Unknown Road
Bach - Toccata and Fugue in D minor
Beethoven - Moonlight Sonata

I was a band nerd in high school and college, can you tell? people ask me what my favorite band is and then give me funny looks when I say Bach.

Or, as James Nicoll said:

The problem with defending the purity of the English language is that English is about as pure as a cribhouse whore. We don't just borrow words; on occasion, English has pursued other languages down alleyways to beat them unconscious and rifle their pockets for new vocabulary.

That is a slanderous lie. English is the language that got beat up by other languages and forced to assimilate their vocabularies. And, I mean, it's no shame getting invaded by the Vikings and the Romans, but being conquered by French refugees ... that's just embarrassing.

American English, now ... there's a history of stealing all the cool words from other languages.  Mostly while enslaving/committing genocide upon their speakers.

But of course it's not consistent.  Nothing in English is consistent.

Lovingly quoted for truth. It is, after all, one of the fun parts of English. Wink

As the wise man said: English is German, as spoken by people who only speak French, and written by people who only read Latin.

A native German speaker once told me English was harder for him than Chinese. "German has rules.  Chinese has rules.  English is backwards, and all your conjugations are wrong."

Perhaps it's like those body part shaped beads that are used in prayer items for healing of that body part?

Well, yeah, but with that glaze?

maybe it wasn't intended to come out quite that color. or you could use ti to pray for healing of, uh ... frostbite? diabetes-related circulation failures? um.

now I'm worried that Hafs has been tossed into Arkham .... where they really don't, as a matter of policy that I assume would go triple for her, allow any internet access of any kind.

would have been

<continuing threadjack, sorry:
However, sparkley vampires might be amusing, once rendered into ink.

They've been, though, and ... I was about to say, they're not. But. My sister brought one of those sparkly vampire books along on a family vacation, and I read chunks of the dialogue out loud to her.  It was hilariously bad, like MST3000 bad.  She was so mad at me.

all done now.>

"Hi, I'm Benjamin" in a German accent? Is that, by any chance, the Ben Andreoli who was on the guest list for Daphne and Tricia's wedding but was "not likely to come" because he was in Germany?

Sounds unlikely to me, since it seems they met at the climbing gym. If one of Tricia's relatives was also a climber, I think Daphne would have thought that was worth mentioning. Unless Tricia brought him along to pick Daphne up, and even so ... Andreoli is an Italian name.  He might speak German, especially if he does a lot of business there, or been posted there by the military.  But I don't think there are a whole lot of Italian Americans who have blood relatives born in Germany.

Erm...I don't see how that indicated she's not the gamma.  It could be that the speaker is Chaz, and promised her that he'd kill her before letting her live as a gamma.

Except that Chaz didn't promise to kill her, when she asked him to promise way back in season 1.

from Knock on Coffins:
Quote
"If... if anything bad happens?" She held up her pinky, crooked. "Promise me you won't let me do anything like that to anybody, man? You'll do what you have to? Pinky-swear?"

"You won't." He hooked his own pinky around hers, feeling the dry warmth of her skin. He hoped she wouldn't notice that he hadn't promised. "Pinky-swear."

That turns out not to be so. In addition to anaphylactic allergic reactions, there are systemic allergic reaction, which cause vomiting. I know, I have a systemic reaction to avocados. It is also perfectly possible to be allergic to red meat. A systemic-reaction allergy and a simply intolerance (lack of enzymes for digestion) may present similarly.

well, shows what I know.
