Salty lamps! Somebody else noted that further up, and I have no excuse for it--other than wailing "Periodic Table TOO BIG!"--because I remember when they put in the sodium vapor lamps on State Street in Rockford, Illinois. After dark, it looked like downtown Armaggedon. With zombies. Ah, the good ol' days. Thank you for the copyediting, and the time-travel moment. If you wanna fix it in the text, I promise I won't tell. Otherwise, I'm left imagining Sol as someone who confuses mercury with sodium. Which is possible, mind you, as I'd expect the chemicals he is familiar with are more... organic in nature, but I expect better of him. Alternatively, it's a blooper not caught by the script team before shooting, and they were unable to retake that scene because of time/budget/weather constraints. I mean, we do have another whole layer of conceit to play with.

Oh, absolutely. Frost is nothing if not observant!
Uh-huh. And observant to different things than our usual crew of profilers. Interesting to think of what they'll be seeing. Worth, I think, will focus more on physical damage done. Mom will see more the emotional damage. Hafs will be concerned over nutrition. Brady will build a picture of the circumstances, etc. Reyes, though. Reyes will be looking to see if Chaz is a monster yet. Not sure if I want to see that debriefing.

Did you see the two or three times she either told or got jokes? It's like she has no sense of humour herself but she knows one when she sees it.
That sounds exactly right. And also a scarily acurate description of, um, me... What interests me in the context of this discussion of empathy and Frost is her visit to Chaz in the hospital, with origami. Did she visit and take along her hobby because she felt a connection to Chaz, or because it's a rule of social interaction that she's learnt along the lines of answering 'Thank you' with 'You're welcome': when coworker is in hospital with injuries, one must visit and give something to occupy recovery time? There was no suggestion that she stopped by to ask questions (as per Chaz' fears in 'Refining Fire'), which implies that her motive was not scientific curiosity, at least. It is interesting, but it's also unlikely that we would have heard if she asked questions. They would, after all, have been questions about things that we're not really supposed to know about. Once more, I agree with Cal's theory. (You're a pretty solid theorizer there, Cal.) Also, whether or not Our Ms. Frost asked questions, I'm fairly sure she picked up some answers.

Oh, definitely. You can also quote from/link to episodes, DVD extras, and LJ entries.
The better to note TPTB's inconsistencies. *g*
TPTB's apparent inconsistencies are merely teasers for untold stories.

At last, we unveil the new toy: wiki.shadowunit.org
Go forth, my minions, and add content!
You must register before you can create/edit pages, and prove you're not a robot.
Also, we're looking for a few good mammals (2 or 3) to volunteer to moderate the wiki. If you'd like to slave thanklessly help out, please comment here or somewhere on the Wiki board that Bear is perhaps even now creating.
Have fun!
Why just mammals? As a cephalopod, I'd think you'd be more sensitive to mammal-biased discrimination. Also, thanks!

I read this and found more weight on the unfortunately-ended pregnancy theory (From the Saltines discussion).
Also wondering what made the Betability take the form it did. Computers and Gamma-vision seems an odd combo, on the surface.

I believe that when I finally have the chance to have kids, I may have to spend my entire pregnancy in hiding. Because I would start hitting people with things.
Have the kids. We need Mad Gastronimites. And hit the people who are rude, then blame hormones. Everybody wins!

My brother once opined that as gays were apparently pink triangles and straights blue squares, that meant bisexuals would have to be mauve heptagons.
No. Just no. Purple, not mauve, please. Although, actually, mauve has a really fascinating place in the history of dyestuffs, as it in the first synthetic dye ever created. There's a whole book about it, entitled, unimaginatively but appropriately, Mauve. Josephine Baker danced just as God made her She didn't care if the whole world looked. Julius Caesar was a people pleaser He conquered Gaul and he wrote a book. These bi people wore the color purple And you're glad they showed up. (Oh yeah) And when that color was cast in doubt Alice Walker got it all wrote up. And then there's mauve. And then there's mauve. And then there's mauve. And then there's mauve. And then there's mauve. And then there's mauve. And then there's That old earth-tone likin', synthetic dyin', anything but flatterizin', Color mauve.

Well, I guess I'm just going to have to disagree The first few days' worth was pretty much Chaz In Peril, but there was a lot going on back at base (and later, in the field), too. And it all worked very well, for me. I certainly never felt at any point like it was all going on too long, and please could you cut this bit... To each their own, I guess Yeah. And just cutting wouldn't have worked either. My experience was not the best example. But I was too close to my own story: I needed that more detached opinion. All the bits I wanted left out, I wanted left out for Chaz, too. If he had to live through them, I wanted to be there for him. And while I would have been happy for him had the team showed up in a black helicopter on Monday morning and exploded the Relative, sometimes life doesn't work that way, and bad things happen to good people who are worried about being bad people.

Anything but that half-rainbow. "Look at me, I'm HALF gay!" Which half? *looks innocent*

I am far too pleased about the fact that, not only did Daphne like my idea for a Angry Kitteh Get Well Soon card enough to actually make it, Chaz likes it, and someone even LOLCATed it! I'm only glad I didn't laugh out loud in the library, because then I might have had to explain that I had commented on Imaginary Friend A's Livejournal about Imaginary Friend B's being in hospital, mentioning Imaginary Friend B's Imaginary Not Pet Cat, leading to Imaginary Friend A making a Get Well Soon Card to Imaginary Friend B from Imaginary Friend B's Imaginary Not Pet Cat, and that a Real Person then made a LOLCAT version of it all... Apart from anything else, I don't think they have internet access in the lunatic asylum... This is the most fun I've had in a fandom, it really is... Good call. They never would have believed in LOLcats. The whole idea is just too improbable.

I don't think this fits in with the Shadow Unit world logic, but it'd be kind of cool if Chas was Addy's manifistation...
I think it would be cool, too. And I'm not so sure it doesn't fit. Reyes must have some evidence for the Anomaly-as-singular-monster theory, as opposed to the Anomaly-as-something-people-do-when-life-gets-too-tough theory (which is what I'd pick, given the evidence I've seen.) The thing to remember about Reyes is, he's been doing this for a while. Aside from arousing my ire, the watching-Chaz-at-15 thing means he was working on WTF theory at least ten years ago. So I'm gonna theorize quietly in the corner for a while, until I forget and get excited and pop up with a Really Cool Idea, only to have it shot down with a perfectly-obvious bit of evidence. At least, that's my plan.

Yup. I felt really guilty that he felt like he had to apologize to me. But I'm not supposed to know that he had a valid excuse.
'Swhat you get for being a character. Lotta hard work. (Don't forget to hold out for the chance to play yourself in the movie.)
