106  Episodes / Episodes, Season 1 / Re: 1x07, "Overkill" on: May 13, 2008, 12:01:19 pm
Also, I thought "going to see the elephant" usually referred to warzones

My reaction to "going to see the elephant" is the notion of there being an object or idea that's really large but that everyone is trying like hell to ignore.

Here's a wiki on it:  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elephant_in_the_room

At the time, I thought it was simply Sol using obscure idioms from his journalistic background and the elephant was that a case existed and that he and Chaz weren't talking about it.  But if you then look at the gamma's myth, it has this wonderful echo.  The gamma is an elephant in his own mind.

Not that I saw this on the first read through, but our authors are wonderful and leave us little presents for the second pass through.

(edited to remove the html I thought I needed to post links - oops)

It's you're own fault.  You should know better by now then to eat/drink whilst reading here.

Pardon me, must head out to water the hippopotamodes.

I pretty much live in that convention center during Siggraph, and its nice to have a alternatives to the usual crap convention fare.

Hey!  I worked in the Guerilla Studio/2D several years  . . .unfortunately will not be going this year.  Have I met you?

I have to agree that Brady would have been out of character - tail end charlie should not have left his partner alone.

To give the guy a break, he's a little off his game from the visits with the fearmonger.

I suppose in this crowd, it's not a superpower to be able to rattle off the book title & author from a smidge of plot /description of cover?  Ah Well.

My honey's SP is finding rock star parking on a busy street or mall lot.  He says it's genetic, and his Pop could do it too.

A former coworker's SP was remembering birthdays.  Everyone's.  And their siblings, friends, and kids.  Possibly their dogs.  If the bday was mentioned near her once (or she saw it in the payroll db), she could rattle it off anytime, anywhere.  I wish I could remember when her bday was, but I emailed her to double check on mutual friend's bday last week, and she had it.

After all that, I was wandering through the LJs and saw this:

"And besides, you were just so darned cute last night. I can deny you nothing. (I think the Cowboy suffered some sort of critical damage to his sexual self-image, though. You were that convincing.)"

If you haven't been playing along, the "you" referred here was a female dressed as a (convincing) male, and Cowboy=Brady.  And it was posted 3/1/08 by O.  So Brady saw & liked, and then figured it was a gal (hence the damage to self image as a person who prefers gents).  Or am I reading this wrong?

Anyone ever read the Annotated Pratchett?  Want to make an annotated WTF?

I majored in Lit and feel I needed a bibliography on this one.  (not a complaint.  I just like footnotes)

I echo the whole "puts the Worth dressing down from ep1 in a new light" - do as I say, not as I do, eh, mr FBI?

Oh gosh yes.  The strange and wonderful sculptures or are they abandoned amusement park rides or, well, just what IS that?  I can just picture the chase seen through the, well, stuff.

I've driven through Badger Munitions - I love the buildings where they used to make nitro, with alll the reinforcing on the outside to keep any explosions contained, then the slides descending from the top floor so that the workers could theoretically escape.  I think the ground there is super saturated with the stuff they made bullets and bombs with, and yet currently there are cows grazing on it.  Ho Chunk wants to restore Bison to that prairie.  This area is ripe for an SU episode, with all the head butting between 4 gov't agencies and CSWAB/Sierra club - you could hide a gamma in there somewhere, doing horrible things for what they are certain are all the right reasons.

*waves*  originally chedderhead, moved out to the Cascades a few years back.  Been posting, but since there's a bratfest going on, I'd jump in here. Pass me a New Glarus Spotted Cow, please.

I used to work for the company that built FLW's unitarian church, although it went up long before I worked there (or was born, I think) . . .anyway, we were steeped in FLW lore - he was FAMOUS in Wisconsin for not paying his bills.  And while he was a wonderful architect, some of his engineering notions were a bit off, and some (like reinforced concrete strength) were amazingly right.

Two years ago, I was in Pennsylvania and called to reserve a spot on a tour of some shed he'd built near a stream - you may have heard of it - and the gal on the line asked me how I'd heard of Wright.  I literally couldn't answer.  I'm not sure when I had heard of FLW.  I don't remember ever not knowing about FLW.  Doesn't everyone know who he is?

I mean, it's like not knowing who Farve is . . .  (and I'm not a football fan)

The MRE problem, it seems to me, is the sameness.  I believe the packs are delivered in cases rather randomly, so it's up in the air if you will get 14 assorted meals or 14 servings of chicken ala king for a 2 week deploy.  A single MRE isn't bad (I like the beef stew).  However, do you want to eat the same thing over and over and over and over . . . .

119  General Category / General Discussion / Re: The handedness thread (because we need one) on: March 18, 2008, 10:23:26 am
I guess I fall on the radar as ambi:  what ever handed I learned with I tend to stick with, and since both parents are southpaws, I picked up a lot of lefty ways until the school system got ahold of me.  Knit lefty, shoot rifles righty, used to write both handed but have settled on righty in my old age, mouse wherever it sits, dribble soccer balls either foot, though my right is a stronger kicker, hammer left . . the list goes on

Y'know that phrase they use to teach kidlings left from right?  "Your write with your right hand"?  Screwed me up for life, as from one session t the next, I'd grab that fat pencil with a different arm.  30+ years later, I'm still checking for an L of my finger-thumb to confirm which way is left.
